Northern Graves "Derelict Heart" Album Review: Blackened Doom from the Canadian Prairies (2026)

Northern Graves' debut album, Derelict Heart, is a captivating fusion of blackened doom metal, drawing inspiration from the vast Canadian prairies and its ghostly landscapes. The band, formed in 2023 by Damian Smith, showcases a unique blend of styles, reminiscent of Smith's previous project, Altars of Grief, with a touch of Arctos' desolate and bleak atmosphere. The result is a powerful and memorable experience that resonates with listeners.

The album's production is impressive, with a clear and energetic sound. However, there are a few minor flaws. The drumming, particularly by Branson Heinz, is sometimes too loud, especially on the song 'Lanterns', which showcases a beautiful blend of doom and orchestral elements. Additionally, the album closer, a cover of Richard Marx's 'Hazard', feels out of place after the phenomenal title track. Despite these minor quibbles, Derelict Heart is a strong debut that effectively evokes the enormity of a desolate wilderness.

What makes this album particularly fascinating is the band's ability to create a unique atmosphere that transcends the sum of its parts. The music is more blackened than doom, with a fierce and impassioned presentation. The vocals, both harsh and clean, add depth and emotion to the songs. The album's non-metal track, 'Keeper of the Plains', further showcases the band's ability to create a specific and immersive atmosphere.

In my opinion, Northern Graves has found an amazing sound on Derelict Heart. While it may not be particularly mournful or bleak, it effectively conveys the vastness and desolation of the Canadian prairies. The album is a powerful and resonant experience that I found affecting and memorable. I eagerly anticipate the band's future releases.
